Abstract

Purpose: This study aimed to develop a ¡®Logotherapeutic Autobiography Program(LAP)¡¯ for alcoholics¡¯ wives and to identify the effects on traumatic stress and codependency.

Methods: LAP was a program which was included logotherapy and autobiography. It was developed through four steps: literature review, pilot program development, pilot study, and detailed program structuring. The session was divided into four stages: warming up, writing an autobiography, finding the meaning in life, and closing. A quasi-experimental trial with a nonequivalent control group was conducted on 19 patients in the experimental group and 21 in the control group who were alcoholics¡¯ wives. Data collection was conducted for four months from November 2006 to March 2007.

Results: The experimental group reported a significantly lower score in traumatic stress(p=.038) and codependency(p=.032).

Conclusion: This study suggests that LAP is very beneficial and applicable and might contribute to the enhancement of mental health in families and communities that suffer from trauma and meaninglessness.
